George
Young VOWLES October 25 1999 In saying these few words, on behalf of the two groups of ex Dalby residents now living in Brisbane, who meet regularly for lunch and a yarn, I find it most difficult, if not impossible to mention George without coupling his name with that of his late wife, Marie, as to us they were always a twosome. Marie, the outgoing, fun loving person and George, the perfect partner for her. Despite the fact they came to Brisbane, some fifty years ago, I believe they remained true “Dalbyites” at heart, and it was Marie who, many years ago, first suggested a number of ex-Dalby girls, meet for lunch every few months, something they did for years. When, eventually, most of the husbands were retired, we were invited to join them, but I always suspected, that was only a ruse to get us ‘poor husbands’ to foot the bill. But those lunches became very popular, and were thoroughly enjoyed by us all. Following Marie’s death, George continued to be one of us, and as much of the conversation related to Dalby, he was looked on as the supreme authority, as he knew the town and it’s people like the back of his hand.
Whenever I, or any other of his old friends dropped into Markwell Street for a yarn, George, ever the perfect host, always produced a bottle of lemonade, but it was a VERY SPECIAL lemonade, as it had on the label “Bottled in Scotland”. George loved talking of the “old days”, and that lemonade helped no end. It was good for the memory too. We, as a group, extend our sincere sympathy to Brendan and will always remember both George and Marie with affection.
